History was created by the construction of the world's highest railway pier bridge at Bridge No. 164 in Noni, Manipur, under the supervision of Gorkha Terriers.
Kolkata, 27 May 2025 - The Indian Army once again stood tall as a silent force behind nation-building, with the 107 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) 11 Gorkha Rifles known as the Gorkha Terriers playing a decisive role in securing one of the most significant infrastructure milestones in recent history.
Operating under the jurisdiction of the Eastern Command, the Gorkha Terriers provided continuous security and operational support during the construction of the world’s tallest
railway pier bridge at Bridge No. 164 in Noney, Manipur. Their disciplined presence ensured uninterrupted progress in a region frequently challenged by security threats and complex terrain during inclement weather conditions.
On 25 April 2025, the final span of this record-breaking structure was successfully placed, marking a monumental achievement not just in civil engineering, but in civil-military
cooperation and national resolve.
Constructed by BBJ Construction Company Limited (a Government of India Enterprise) under the aegis of Indian Railways, the bridge is a vital link in the ambitious Jiribam–Tupul–Imphal Railway Line, a strategic and developmental lifeline for the Northeast.
While the bridge stands today as a towering symbol of India’s infrastructure capability, it was the unwavering vigilance of the Indian Army's Gorkha Terriers that made this triumph possible. Their role went beyond conventional military duties, exemplifying the Indian Army’s commitment to supporting national development in far-flung and sensitive regions.
The successful completion of the bridge at Noney is not only a triumph of technical prowess but also a salute to the unsung dedication and bravery of the Gorkha Terriers.
The "Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) 11 Gorkha Rifles" is known as the "Gorkha Rifles" or "Gorkhas" and is a distinct regiment within the Indian Army. It's the only Gorkha Regiment raised in Independent India and has a rich history of military service.
The regiment consists of primarily the Kirant Tribes Rai, Limbu, Yakkha, Sunuwar of Eastern Nepal, Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Dooars of West Bengal, Sikkim and other parts of Northeast India.
