This day is celebrated every year as a recognition of the services rendered by the first Commander-in-Chief of Indian Armd Forces, Field Marshal KM Cariappa, OBEwho retired on 14 Jan 1953. It's the mark of recognition and respect for the uncountable silent sacrifices veterans and their families made for the cause of peace

Indian Army is actively engaged in translating its commitment towards the welfare of the veterans through numerous ongoing programs as well as initiating new projects. One of such new initiatives is giving impetus on provisioning of timely and good medical treatment. Towards this end memorandum of agreement between Assam State Health Dept and Indian Army were signed to cover Cashless & Capless treatment of veterans at 8 medical colleges and 10 units of Assam Cancer Care Foundation.

Another initiative was instituted by establishing 37 Veteran Suvidha Kendra (VSKs) in remote and inaccessible areas. The main focus of these VSKs is to provide intimate support to the veterans, related to various issues pertaining to their pensions, entitlements etc. In yet another endeavor, on the spot resolution of grievances for pensioners was organised through Raksha Pension Samadhan Aayojan on 06 Jan 2023 at
