FIRST BILATERAL SIMULTANEOUS COCHLEAR IMPLANTATION AT A GOVT HOSPITAL IN EASTERN INDIA.

 

On 21st Jun 2022, Dept of ENT, Command Hospital Eastern Command (CHEC), Kolkata performed Bilateral Simultaneous Cochlear Implantation (CI) in a 4 year old girl child with deafness since birth. The epoch making surgery was performed by Lt Col ( Dr) Sunil Goyal (Cochlear Implant Surgeon) under able leadership of Maj Gen Shivinder Singh, Commandant, CHEC, Kolkata. This is the first of its kind in a Govt Hospital in Eastern India. The surgery was performed under general anesthesia and last about 3 hours. 

Bilateral CI is the standard of care for children with deafness since birth across the world. It has added advantage in helping the child to localize direction of sound and hearing in noise.  

Maj Gen Shivinder Singh, Commandant,  CHEC, Kolkata on this special occasion stated that Armed Forces Medical Services strives to bring the best possible treatment available in world to its patient clientele. This will go a long way in maximizing hearing benefits leading to better scholastic and occupational outcomes for them.
